Survey: Journalists top the list for professions consuming the most coffee

Results indicated that the highest consumers – journalists, police officers, and teachers – take in over four cups of coffee per day.

A survey published last week on the blog of Pressat, a UK-based press distribution firm, narrowed down the top ten professions for daily coffee intake, from drivers ranked at #10 up to journalists and other media staff at #1.

The Pressat team surveyed 10,000 individuals in the workforce about their coffee-drinking habits, and the results were substantial: 85% of the participants indicated that they drink at least three cups of coffee per day, and almost 70% confessed that without their daily cup of coffee, their production in the workplace would undoubtedly be affected.

The reasons behind such an intake of daily caffeine for these professionals come into question. “Could it be that being overstretched or working late pushed the workforce to consume more caffeine?” the blog asked.

Results indicated that the highest consumers – journalists, police officers, and teachers – take in over four cups of coffee per day. In this aspect, Pressat references a study conducted by the University of South Carolina stating that the recommended dose of caffeine should not exceed 200 mg, which is comparable to four cups of coffee.

According to the survey, the top professions for consuming coffee are as follows:

  1. Journalists and media staff
  2. Police officers
  3. Teachers
  4. Plumbers and trade workers
  5. Nurses and medical staff
  6. Company executives
  7. Telesales
  8. IT technical support
  9. Retail staff
  10. Drivers

The Pressat team also found that 62% of the workers surveyed were not aware of the health risks involved in consuming extensive or unnecessary amounts of coffee. These risks range “from strokes to anxiety, and right through to heart problems,” according to the blog. Additionally, results indicated that males in the workforce tend to drink more coffee than females, although the margin is slim at only 5% more.
