Drew Peterson accused in murder-for-hire plot, appears in court today

The Peterson case was so notorious that Lifetime produced a television movie on the case, with TV stars Rob Lowe playing Peterson and Kelly Cuoco playing Stacy Peterson, who disappeared and was never found.

Former Illinois police sergeant Drew Peterson, who received international notoriety in the United States in 2007 when his fourth wife disappeared, is back in court three weeks after being charged with a murder-for-hire plot.

Peterson is currently serving a 38-year prison term for the murder of his third wife, and prosecutors will be seeking more as they lay out evidence against Peterson, according to a Fox 32 News report.

FBI agents have been subpoenaed to testify at the preliminary hearing. The testimony they give is likely to surround secretly recorded conversations between Peterson and another inmate where he discussed his alleged murder-for-hire plot, according to the report.

The Peterson case became so famous that actor Rob Lowe portrayed him in a Lifetime television movie titled, “Drew Peterson: Untouchable,” which focuses on the events surrounding the death of Kathleen Savio and the disappearance of Stacy Peterson. Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco portrayed Stacy Peterson.

Peterson, a former sergeant with the Bollingbrook Police Department near Chicago, allegedly discussed the plot with the inmate between September 2013 and December 2014.

Peterson was convicted in the death of Savio, but he is only suspected in the disappearance of his fourth wife Stacy. Her body has never been found, and Peterson claims she left him for another man.

The hearing today should only last a half hour at most, as Judge Richard Brown needs only to find probable cause that a crime happened, which is considered to be a low legal threshold.

Peterson faces another 40 years in prison if he is convicted of the new charges.
