PC sales expected to slump in following quarters

Personal computer sales are predicted to fall in upcoming quarters.

According to a new market analysis by a Dispatch Times report, shipments of personal computers have dropped by 9.5% during the second fiscal quarter of 2015, and nose dived more than 11% from this point last year. The statistics indicate a downward trend in the desirability of PCs being out paced by the burgeoning use of smart phones, tablets, and other mobile devices.

The analysis was conducted by Gartner Inc., which revealed a slump of 75.6 million PCs shipped in the second quarter of 2014 to 68.4 million of this year. Despite the forthcoming update of Windows 10, Gartner doesn’t forecast a lift in the data in the remaining quarters of this year.

Yet, the downturn in PC sales can be measured against the widespread use of mobile devices, which operate with the same functionalities as a personal computer. Another hidden contributing factor is that companies are devoting less of their budget to PC upgrades because the products are not significantly improved to justify the expenditure.

Marking the release of Windows 10 on July 29 won’t alter the numbers because the processing speed to operate Windows 10 is not that much higher than for previous Windows versions. Rather, consumers will settleĀ for a free upgrade further damaging PC’s prospects.

However, Gartner reveals that Lenovo has the PC market cornered with 13.5 million units sold during the second quarter. Yet, Apple is climbing the market share at 16% growth, with an additional 5.1 million computers sold over the course of last year.

Incumbent microprocessor manufacturers such as Micron and AMD have taken a hit as well and don’t predict any rise in fortune.
