Toby Keith makes controversial comments about Charleston black church massacre

After calls for gun control by President Barack Obama when nine people were gunned down this week, Toby Keith has a few choice words.

President Barack Obama and others are beating the drum for gun control in the wake of a massacre by a white supremacist at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina — but country music star Toby Keith is raising eyebrows by spreading a different message.

Keith said on Thursday that stricter gun laws is the wrong answer, and would have made absolutely no difference in Charleston, according to a Christian Science Monitor report.

He argued that even in countries that have strict gun policies like Norway, there is still such violence — he was probably referring to the shooting and bombing in Norway that resulted in the deaths of 77 people in 2011.

Instead, perhaps the solution would be to have more guns around — he said that if a police officer had been at the church on Wednesday, maybe most of the people would still be alive, Keith argued.

Obama said in a press conference after the shooting that the U.S. has mass violence that is not seen in other advanced countries, and something should be done about it. The Democratic frontrunner for president in 2016, Hillary Rodham Clinton, also urged Americans to consider “common sense gun reforms.”

However, Keith and the National Rifle Association are hitting back at the notion that putting stricter gun laws in place will help the situation. One NRA board member even said on a discussion forum that the state senator who was killed in the attack is partly to blame because he opposed permitting a concealed handgun in church. The board member said that eight people might have died because of his opposition. The NRA, however, quickly distanced itself from those comments.

There have been 70 mass shootings in the United States since 1982 according to some gun control proponents.
