NYPD officer shot in the head; police arrest suspect

The officer, 25-year-old Brian Moore, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, where he underwent emergency surgery.

A New York Police Department officer has been shot in the head while trying to stop a man who he believed was carrying a handgun.

The suspect has been taken into custody, and the officer, 25-year-old Brian Moore, is currently in critical condition, according to media reports.

Moore was shot when he and his partner, who were driving in an unmarked police car, pulled up to a man who was adjusting his waistband in a suspicious manner on Saturday evening, according to police.

After talking to the man, he suddenly pulled out a gun and fire twice, hitting Moore, prompting his partner, 30-year-old Erik Jansen, to call for help. It was the fifth shooting of a New York police officer in recent months.

The officers had no opportunity to return fire, said Police Commissioner William Bratton. Moore underwent surgery after being rushed to a Queens hospital in a patrol car.

Police combed the area after the shooting, and helicopters could be seen overhead as officers scoured the neighborhood. They arrested 35-year-old Demetrius Blackwell about an hour and a half later near the crime scene. He lives on that particular block.

However, police were unable to find a weapon, and he had not been charged with anything as of this morning.

Witnesses had apparently fingered Blackwell, who ran from officers.

Moore has been a police officer since July 2010.

The shooting recalled the killing of two police officers as they sat in a patrol car in Brooklyn back in December. The man who did it later killed himself and had posted online about wanting to kill officers in retaliation for Eric Garner, whose death caused nationwide protests.
