Officer who arrested James Holmes provides chilling testimony at trial

An officer recalls finding and arresting theatre shooter James Holmes in his murder trial.

The James Holmes murder trial took an upsetting turn when witnesses testified about the bloody crime scene in Aurora, Colorado.

Holmes is on trial for the Aurora theatre shootings in 2012. During a screening of Dark Knight Rises, Holmes opened fire and shot indiscriminately in the theatre. Twelve people died and 70 people were injured.

One witness gave testimony about the shooting. Katie Medley testified about what she saw that night.

“I saw him step in. He was wearing a (gas) mask and Kevlar. He had a longer gun with a scope on it,” said Medley.

Medley’s husband, Caleb, was shot during the massacre. “I saw blood pouring from his face and I knew that he had been shot in the head,” said Medley. Caleb Medley survived, but is paralyzed.

Officer Jason Oviatt testified about discovering Holmes was the shooter. Oviatt thought Holmes was an officer because he wore a gas mask. However, as other officers went into the theatre, Holmes stayed outside.

“That said to me that he wasn’t an officer, and given he was wearing a gas mask where gas was used during a shooting, I knew that he had to be involved in the shooting,” said Oviatt.

Oviatt then took Holmes into custody.

“I made him kneel down on the ground and then cut his coat off,” said Oviatt in court. “There was too much material in the coat, I was cutting with a razor but every cut I made there was more to get through it took too long.”

Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
