Man arrested in radical Islamic plot to bomb Kansas Army base: police

Authorities believe John Booker is mentally ill, and tried to get him counseling before he attempted to carry out the attack.

A man has been charged with plotting to attack a Kansas military base on behalf of the Islamic State group.

Authorities believe John T. Booker Jr., 20, of Topeka, is mentally ill and planned a suicide bomb attack on Fort Riley, which is about 70 miles west of Topeka, according to an Associated Press report.

Booker was apparently acting strangely days before being arrested, and a Muslim cleric was counseling him on behalf of the FBI, according to the report.

Booker allegedly told an FBI informant he wanted to kill Americans and wage jihad on behalf of the Islamic State, and he argued that such an attack would be justified based on the Quran which “says to kill your enemies wherever they are,” the criminal complaint states.

He was arrested as he was trying to arm what he had believed to be a 1,000-pound bomb outside of Fort Riley. He has been hit with a total of three charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Authorities also charged 28-year-old Alexander E. Blair with failing to report Booker’s plans, and police believe that Blair both shared violent views, with Blair even lending Booker the money to build a bomb.

FBI agents apparently brought Booker to Imam Omar Hazim of the Islamic Center of Topeka in order to receive counseling, hoping that he would change his beliefs.

Booker is believed to suffer from bipolar disorder.

Booker evidently told an FBI informant six months ago that he was disliked at his mosque because he supported al-Qaida. He had made postings on Facebook about planning to die in a jihad, according to another AP report.

In the midst of the counseling that was intended to turn his life around, two FBI informants portraying Islamic State sympathizers were watching his activities, eventually leading up to his arrest for attempting to arm a bomb outside of the Army post.
