Where’s the transparency Hilary? Clinton caught hiding emails

A recent discovery reveals Clinton used her personal email account while serving as Secretary of State

As if there were not already enough rumors circulating about the Clintons’ inclination towards secrecy, the New York Times reported late last night that Hilary had not submitted records of her correspondence while serving as Secretary of State.

Although she held the post for four years, 2009 – 2013, she was never given a state department email (one that ends in @state.gov). She used her personal email account to conduct all of her official diplomatic business. Aside from being an incredibly risky security move in a era rampant with cyber terrorism, it also means that none of her correspondence has been preserved on department servers as is legally required according to the Federal Records Act.

It was only two months ago that her personal email account was discovered. Emails regarding the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi were requested of Clinton by a House committee investigating the matter. After carefully reviewing her emails, Clinton provided 300 emails, amounting to approximately 900 pages, to the committee.

Hilary was also forced to give the State Department 55,000 other emails from her time in office.

“It’s a shame it didn’t take place automatically when she was secretary of state as it should have,” said Thomas S. Blanton, the director of the National Security Archive, a group based at George Washington University that advocates government transparency. “Someone in the State Department deserves credit for taking the initiative to ask for the records back. Most of the time it takes the threat of litigation and embarrassment.”

Federal regulations require any letters or emails sent or received by a federal official to be retained as official government records. This transparency allows congressional committees, the news media, and historians to have access to the communications.

The recent revelation has quickly been picked up by Republican presidential hopefuls who are already working to discredit the potential Democratic nominee.

“Hillary Clinton should release her emails,” said a spokeswoman for former Florida governor Jeb Bush, Kristy Campbell. “Hopefully, she hasn’t already destroyed them.”

In December, Bush created a website on which he published thousands of emails from his eight years as governor of Florida.

“Governor Bush believes transparency is a critical part of public service and of governing,” said Campbell.

Current Secretary of State John Kerry has used the official “state.gov” email address provided to him from his first day on the job. His correspondence is being dutifully archived for posterity.
