Idris Elba rumored to play the villain in ‘Star Trek 3’, possibly as a Klingon

Screenwriter Damon Lindelof teases details from third installment of rebooted 'Star Trek' film series.

Idris Elba is reportedly in early talks to play the villain in Star Trek 3, but it’s possible that director Justin Lin will make the famously handsome 42-year-old The Wire alum entirely unrecognizable for the coveted role. According to E!, Elba’s character may be a Klingon, the warrior alien race with ridges across their foreheads made famous by Michael Dorn’s Enterprise officer Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek 3 studio Paramount Pictures have already announced that Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana will all reprise their roles in the next installment, but few details have been revealed about this film’s plot or primary antagonist. Star Trek Into Darkness gave viewers of the rebooted franchise their first look at Klingons, and producer and screenwriter Damon Lindelof made his love for the alien race known at a premiere for the second film.

“You can never see enough Klingons, and I think in this film we’ve given the audience a little taste, but there’s also a promise that there’s a larger conflict on the horizon, and that would be fun to see,” Lindelof told HeyUGuys.com.

When asked if Klingons would play a large role in the third Star Trek, he reportedly said, “Draw your own conclusions, my friend. I confirm nothing and deny all.”

Michael Dorn played Klingon officer Worf in the ’80s and ’90s series Star Trek: The Next Generation and its films, and reprised the role in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Klingons eventually become allies of the Enterprise, but its entirely possible that Elba will portray a villainous Klingon, as they make incredibly formidably enemies because the warrior aliens aim to achieve honor by fighting.

Star Trek 3 is set for release on Jul. 8, 2016.
