Major theater chains refuse to participate in Netflix ‘experiment’

Four major theater exhibitors refuse to support Netflix's desire to release films in theaters and at home simultaneously.

When Netflix announced plans last fall to release a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel in homes and in theaters simultaneously, many theater chains expressed their refusal to show the film. The streaming company bought Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation with a similar release goal this week, and four of the country’s largest film exhibitors are already telling Variety that they won’t screen the potentially Oscar-contending drama.

AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Carmike all told Variety last September that they wouldn’t support Netflix’s partnership with The Weinstein Company and IMAX for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2.

“While a homevideo release may be simultaneously performing in certain Imax locations, at Regal we will not participate in an experiment where you can see the same product on screens varying from three stories tall to 3-inch wide on a smart phone,” said Regal spokesman Russ Nunley. “We believe the choice for truly enjoying a magnificent movie is clear.”

The major exhibitors typically expect distributors to honor a 90-day delay between a theatrical debut and a home entertainment release, and repeated that expectation when Netflix announced they had purchased Beasts of No Nation this week and will debut the film simultaneously on its streaming service.

Beasts of No Nation producer Amy Kaufman is remaining optimistic about Netflix’s plans for the film, saying that the company’s unique intentions “could be a game changer” and have “the potential to change the way people perceive how movies and art are delivered to them.”

“This movie will have the muscle of Netflix behind it,” said Kaufman. “It will definitely be seen by a lot more and different kinds of people through Netflix than it would have through a traditional platform.”
