Sierra Leone’s vice president placed in Ebola quarantine

Authorities fear Sam Sumana was exposed to the deadly virus after one of his security guards died of the disease, which has ravaged the country since last year causing thousands of deaths.

Sierra Leone’s vice president is being quarantined over fears that he has been exposed to Ebola after one of his security guards died of the disease.

Vice President Sam Sumana voluntarily submitted to a quarantine of 21 days after one of his security personnel passed away last Tuesday from Ebola, and he has called on those who also came in contact with the man to put themselves in quarantine, according to an Associated Press report.

Sierra Leone is one of three countries, along with Guinea and Liberia, to be ravaged by the disease since last year. Although the spread of the disease has started to slow down, the epidemic has sickened well over 20,000 people and resulted in close to 10,000 deaths.

Sierra Leone’s deputy minister of information and communications Theo Nicol told the AP that Sumana opted to quarantine himself because “he wants to lead by example.”

Although Ebola cases had been slowing down, Sierra Leone has been experiencing a recent rise in new Ebola cases, an alarming trend that caused President Ernest Bai Koroma to put restrictions back in place. A total of 18 new cases have been recorded in the country over the past week, an increase from 16 new cases the week before, which broke a trend in declining cases.

The restrictions include a nighttime ban on boats, as authorities believe the fishing industry is helping to spread the disease. It would also restrict commercial vehicles from off-loading their goods in western market areas. Regulations were also put in place for ferries and health checkpoints, and the police presence will be increase to enforce them. Limits will be placed on public transportation, specifically the number of passengers in taxis.
