Couple of 67 years dies together hand-in-hand, “Notebook” style

A marriage that began all the way back in 1947 ended on two beds in a hospice that had been pushed together, with both of them holding hands and family at their side.

An elderly couple died together in hospice while holding hands, like a scene straight out of “The Notebook.”

Floyd and Violet Hartwig died on Feb. 11 after 67 years of marriage, passing away at their home as they laid close to one another, their beds pushed together by family members to allow them to spend their last breaths together, according to an ABC News report.

Donna Scharton, their child, said her mother had dementia for hte last several years and the family noticed her decline around the holidays. Meanwhile, her father was diagnosed with kidney failure and was given two weeks to live, so the family decided to have them share the hospice.

The Hartwigs had owned a ranch in California. They first met while in grammar school, and their relationship began when Mr. Hartwig got back from the Navy. They were married on Aug. 16, 1947, and had three children: Scharton and her siblings Carol and Kenneth.

Scharton said her parents “weren’t fancy,” and that her father served six years in the Navy before coming home to work for a feed company while her mother helped take care of the ranch and cooked meals, preparing breakfast for her father every morning at 4:30.

Even close to death, her father made his wife his top priority, even telling his doctor that he was OK, he just wanted her “fixed,” despite the fact that he was in a lot of pain.

As the end neared, Scharton’s family put their hands together, and they died that way. Although her mother wasn’t coherent, they told her that her husband had passed away and was waiting for her, and five hours later she died as well.
