Inspector Gadget is being rebooted by Netflix

Inspector Gadget is back with an all new series premiering on Netflix

Netflix has been bolstering up its stock of children’s shows and now you can officially add Inspector Gadget to this list.

The U.S. rights of the popular cartoon, that originally aired in 1983, and which later became a live-action movie starring Matthew Broderick in 1999, were acquired by Netflix. The show has already aired in Europe and the U.S. version will see its 26 episodes released in March.

The show will feature updated gadgets and a new computer generated look for the inspector. All 26 episodes were produced by Canadian television company DHX Media.

Inspector Gadget is about a bumbling bionic inspector who solves crimes.

Erik Barmack, VP of global independent content at Netflix said, “It’s one of those shows where we’re able to hit a few different audiences. We think that kids are going to love the show … but it’s also going to get some co-viewing because there is a generation of parents who grew up on the original.”

Netflix has more than just Inspector Gadget coming out for your kids, as they also ordered the remake of the British cartoon Danger Mouse, which is about a crime fighting secret agent rodent. The show originally aired in the USA from 1982-1992 on Nickolodeon. This is planned to release in spring of 2016.

Netflix also has plans for upcoming reboots of Magic School Bus, Popples, and Care Bears. In addition, to these shows Netflix signed a multi-year deal with DreamWorks  for 300 hours of original programming inspired from existing properties such as Turbo Fast, All Hail King Julien, and Richie Rich.

If you think that is it, Netflix has also acquired three additional children’s shows including the Canadian Some Assembly Required, a live-action series about a 14 year old boy who becomes the CEO of a toy company, and Bottersnikes & Gumbles, an animated series based on a book series of the same name.

All this new children’s content is an investment to keep children watching Netlfix programming. Amazon recently announced the renewal of four original kids series (Creative Galaxy, Annedroids, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, Tumble Leaf) and the fight for the children’s eyes continues.
