Winter weather continues to hammer large parts of the U.S.

Cold temperatures have persisted, keeping snow on the ground and causing some cities to scramble to replenish road salt supplies before another snowstorm creates a crisis.

Shivering residents across the United States hoping for a respite from the cold weather were disappointed on Tuesday, as more wintry weather hit the Plains and the South and cold temperatures kept the East Coast frigid.

Snow, sleet, rain, and freezing rain hit the southern Plains and the South, causing cancellations and delays in school districts from Texas eastward, according to an Associated Press report.

The East Coast didn’t get another blast of snowy weather, but temperatures remained very low, and in some cases below zero.

The snow has been so ubiquitous that across the United States there have been salt shortages. Communities in Ohio were running low on the substance, and some cities have been on a waiting list for tons of road salt. A total of 60 inches of snow has fallen on the region this winter, and the cold temperatures have kept the snow from melting away. If another major snowstorm hits the area, the lack of road salt could create serious issues for the surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, in Georgia, officials warned inexperienced hikers on the Appalachian Trail about the dangers posed by the wintry weather. At a hiking center in Georgia, 16 hikers left Tuesday morning, and officials were keen to keep them aware of the dangers of being trapped in a harsh environment where cellphone coverage is practically nonexistent with roads miles away, according to the AP report.

The National Weather Service had projected a mix of snow and freezing rain would hit the Carolinas today, while Georgia and northern Friday were likely to get rain. Freezing rain was possible in Texas and the Gulf Coast states, and light snow was projected for the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.
