Reports claim that McCarthy and Wiig's rumored participation in 'Ghostbusters' reboot is being negotiated, and they will be joined by Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

When director Paul Feig tweeted last October that the new Ghostbusters film he is directing and co-writing will star “hilarious women,” people instantly assumed his Bridesmaids stars Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig would be involved in the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, McCarthy and Wiig are in fact in negotiations to star in the film, and will be joined by Saturday Night Live veterans Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

McCarthy was always the most likely candidate for a role in Ghostbusters 3, since Feig cast the award-winning actress in Bridesmaids, The Heat and his 2015 film Spy. Even iconic Ghostbusters star Bill Murray approved of hers and Bridesmaids star Wiig’s rumored casting, stating that he “would go to that movie,” and adding that “they’d probably have better outfits, too.” While Feig has worked with McCarty and Wiig before, this will be his first time directing Jones and McKinnon. Jones recently earned praise for her role in Chris Rock’s Top Five, and was promoted to feature player status on SNL last fall. McKinnon has been on SNL since 2012 and was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the show last year.

Murray is reportedly one of the reasons that the film will be starring these four “hilarious women”; the original cast of Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson had agreed to reprise their roles, but sources claim Murray was the one who was still hesitant to return. When Ramis passed away last year, the franchise’s original director, Ivan Reitma,  handed the reigns over to Feig, who re-conceived the project as a film reboot.

The story for Ghostbusters 3 is still a closely-guarded secret, but sources say that the four women will be filming in New York over the summer. Feig recently tweeted that the film is set for a theatrical release on Jul. 22, 2016.
