A 17-year-old boy who went snow-tubing with friends in Long Island, N.Y. died after he crashed into a light pole, police said.

Suffolk County police say the boy was having fun on a street in Huntington at around 10 p.m. Monday night when the incident happened, according to an Associated Press report.

He was one of three teens that had been taking turns snow-tubing, and police believe he lost control of the tube and collided with the light pole. He was identified as Sean Urda from East Northport.

Emergency crews transported him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead.

The whole region had been under a blizzard warning at the time with heavy snowfall expect in the Northeast. The National Weather Service was predicting moderate to heavy snow with gusty winds.

The area had recorded more than a foot of snow, and large numbers of plows were working to clear the snow early Tuesday morning. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a travel ban on Long Island roads and halted trains at 11 p.m. for safety reasons. Shelters were also opened due to the blizzard.

The area is expected to be under a blizzard watch until late Tuesday night, with winds expected up to 40 miles per hour creating whiteout conditions. Although the National Weather Service says that the worst of the storm should be over by mid-morning, snow will continue to fall throughout Tuesday.
