‘Gang-related’ shooting in Omaha leaves three dead, five wounded

Authorities said that witnesses refused to cooperate -- possibly because they were intimidated by certain people at the scene.

Three people been killed and five people were hospitalized after a gang-related shooting in an unoccupied home in Omaha, Nebraska, according to police.

Jakela Foster, 19, and Latisha Fox, 24, died from gunshot wounds during a house party, which took place in the northwestern section of the city in the early morning hours, according to an NBC News report.

A third individual, 26-year-old Cameron Harris, died at the hospital later, and two more victims were hospitalized in serious condition. Three more victims also had gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital.

Police estimate that more than 40 people were at the unoccupied dwelling when violence broke out, which authorities believe had to do with gangs. Police arrested Christopher T. Grotell and are looking into his involvement into the shootings.

The investigation has been hindered by the fact that none of the witnesses would help police. Believing they may have been intimidated into silence at the scene, police are pleading with attendees to come forward now with information.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said the violence was the “product of gang members that have no regard for human life.”

According to an Associated Press report, a woman who lived across the street from the dwelling said she was asleep when a shot ripped through their wall of their bedroom and lodged in a wall. She said she was surprised by the shooting, describing the street as relatively peaceful and mostly occupied by the elderly.

Police intend to release more details at a news conference over the weekend. They have not said whether anyone has been arrested for the shooting.

Two people were arrested for disorderly conduct following the shooting, according to the Omaha World-Herald, after a disturbance at the hospital involving the relatives of the victims.
