Emma Watson cast as a Disney princess

Emma Watson is set to play Belle in Disney's live-action adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast.'

The studio announced Monday that former Harry Potter star Emma Watson will play Belle in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast film. The film’s production is scheduled to begin later this year. A release date has not been announced.

Soon after The Wrap broke the news and Disney confirmed it, Emma Watson expressed her excitement on Facebook. She said that singing and dancing to Be Our Guest and Something There feels “surreal” and that the film was a “such a big part”of her life growing up.

“My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting,” Watson wrote. She added that she would be taking some singing lessons soon.

Watson, 24, is best known for her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter franchise, but she is hanging up her cloak in exchange for a yellow ball gown. And she had planned on doing so for a while. Watson was actually cast as Belle in 2011.

At the time, Guillermo del Toro was the director and Warner Bros. was the distributor. And now, four years later, she is still set to play the role.

This time, she will be under the direction of Bill Condon, who directed the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Part 2 and Dreamgirls. The script was written by Stephen Chbosky, who has worked with Watson before. Chbosky directed the film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower in which Watson starred. No further information on casting has been announced, so the world is left to wonder who will play Belle’s beast.

Disney’s animated Beauty and the Beast, which originally released in 1991,was a hit that ended up grossing more than $400 million worldwide including 3-D and Imax releases. It was also one of a handful of animated films to score an Oscar nomination for best picture. And it was the only animated film to earn one before the academy expanded its number of nominees in 2009. That same year, the film won two Oscars, including best original song.

Beauty and the Beast is the latest animated classic to be turned into a live-action film following Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent, the Mouse House’s adaptation of the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty that grossed $757 million at the box office in 2014. Disney’s next live adaptation set to premiere in theaters is Cinderella, starring Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Madden and more.

Cinderella will hit the screens March 13. Disney’s adaptation of The Jungle Book will follow, and it will star Bill Murray and Ben Kingsley. The film will be released in 2016.

A princess is not the only character the world will see Emma Watson play in 2015 and beyond. According to International Movie Database, Watson will star in two films with 2015 release dates.

In Colonia, which is currently undergoing filming, Watson plays a young girl (Lena) searching for her boyfriend who has been abducted. She ends up in the infamous, dangerous sect Colonia Dignidad.

In Regression, which is currently in post-production, Watson plays Angela Gray. Angela is the daughter of a man who committed a crime that he can no longer remember.
