Browns’ Josh Gordon faces one year NFL suspension

Browns' receiver Josh Gordon's career in jeopardy after failed drug test.

The key to getting away with something is simple: do not get caught. As obvious as this may seem, current Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has not gotten the memo. Gordon failed his third drug test Sunday and is now subject to a one-year ban from the NFL.

The news was first reported by ESPN analysis Adam Scheftervia who wrote on Twitter, “Browns WR Josh Gordon flunked another drug test and now will be subject to a one-year banishment, per league sources.” Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk later mentioned that the receiver had also tested positive for alcohol.

This latest drug test failure is not the first setback the young receiver has created for himself. Well documented by the Cleveland Browns’ organization, Gordon has had a troubled past two seasons. Starting off the 2013 season Gordon was suspended for the first two games after breaching the league’s substance-abuse policy. Then, during the midst of the 2014 preseason while staying in Raleigh, North Carolina, Gordon was arrested and charged with driving while impaired after he was pulled over for speeding.

For this he would be suspended for the first 10 games of the 2014 season and would later be suspended from the last game of the season due to breaking team policy. The Browns, having stood by Gordon after his continual mistakes, are most likely done with the receiver, the recent drug test failure being called a “slap in the face” to the whole Browns’ organization.

“We want to take care of our own, but at the same time, we’re gonna hold our guys accountable,” stated Browns’ head coach Mike Pettine after the 2014 season. “At some point, you get tired of using the word potential. So this offseason for him puts him squarely at a crossroads for us.” Gordon being one of the most productive receivers just a year ago did not put up the same kind of stats this season, the main reason being he didn’t play in many games.

However, it will not be a winning situation for the Browns if they choose to cut Gordon. In fact, it will make an organization that was lacking at the wide receiver position going into this offseason much, much worse. 2014 Free-agent addition Andrew Hawkins was the most productive of the Browns’ receivers this season only catching 63 receptions for 824 yards, the second most being by undrafted rookie Taylor Gabriel who caught 36 passes for 621 yards.

Not only do the Browns lose Gordon’s productivity at the receiver position, but they also lose his size. Gordon, standing 6’3” and weighing 225 pounds, is all around bigger than Andrew Hawkins, who is 5’7” and 180 pounds, or Taylor Gabriel, who is 5’8” 167 pounds. Though both receivers bring massive amounts of speed to the offense, neither one is big enough to be a true No. 1 receiver.

In a league where giants take the field every Sunday, it is nice to have some sizable players on a team. If the Browns are going to have a fighting chance in 2015 the team cannot emerge from the offseason without serious additions to their receiver group. As for Gordon, his future is murky. If the Browns choose to cut him, he may never play in the NFL again.
